UPDATE
We can confirm that "it's not you, it's us" or rather "....it's actually 'them'".
The book search function is definitely not operating as it ought to be.
That said, it has gotten slightly better the past few days, and it pays to persevere. We suggest using the back button* and repeat your action - including the page error message at the end of the registration process that solittletime mentions.
You will get there in the end. But we admit it's annoying.
All we can say is that it is being looked at, but the word from our Tech Team is that there currently isn't a clear way to fix it.

*Side note, this can affect things when using pre-numbered labels. Double check the BCID you started with is the one you finish with. Don't stick any labels or bookplates into your books until you are at the end of the book registration process and it confirms to you the BCID.

Some general tips though:
- the source option to use from the drop down list is "Google"
- the best entry option to use is the title
- in the event the search returns no results, hit the back button and try 3 or 4 times before reverting to the 'skip search' button option, and follow the prompts from there taking you through the process.
You will need to manually enter the title of the book, and the author (as well as the book's category), by typing in the information. We also highly recommend that you manually enter the ISBN, if there is one. If you don't do this, you may well get the error again, and you certainly won't get a book cover displayed.
- if you manage to register your book and it is without the book cover there are ways around that. You can utilize Goodreads or Library Thing to find and save the cover to upload it using the manual "Upload Cover" button.

We rely on the 3rd party sites - Amazon and Google - for them to not throttle our searches, but it appears that is what they are doing. As Ardik explained a few years back:
- Google Books has a daily(?) quota for lookup request from a single IP (like from bookcrossing.com). - I haven't found out how much is allowed, but it must be many thousands (see below).
- Every day we did hit that quota sooner or later. That's when lookup started to fail, day by day.
- [skipping some tech stuff ... ;-> ]
- Every registered book has this "Global Overview" link. When you click that link you get sort of a - yeah - global overview. That page automatically calls a Google Books lookup.

It took a while to fix this same issue several years ago, and that fix held in place for 3 years. We just need to figure out a new way of fixing it this time, and that, ultimately takes time.

All of that aside, as we said at the beginning, it is much better in the past 24 hours than it has been for the past few weeks, so perseverance is key. And there is always the 'skip search' option.

Complete Thread
I tried registering two different books tonight, and got the same error message on both. This is its beginning:

Server Error in '/' Application.
Object reference not set to an instance of an object.
Description: An unhandled exception occurred during the execution of the current web request. Please review the stack trace for more information about the error and where it originated in the code.

Exception Details: System.NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.

There were some issues several hours ago, but things ought to be back on track now.
Try logging out, clearing your cache and logging in again.
That should fix things.

It's long but starts with:

"Server Error in '/' Application.
Object reference not set to an instance of an object.
Description: An unhandled exception occurred during the execution of the current web request. Please review the stack trace for more information about the error and where it originated in the code.

Exception Details: System.NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.

Source Error:

An unhandled exception was generated during the execution of the current web request. Information regarding the origin and location of the exception can be identified using the exception stack trace below.

Stack Trace: "

This happened a few days ago also and then stopped. I've been registering today without the problem but it has started up again.

ETA: The problem comes and goes on its own. I'm using a desktop PC using Firefox.

Though right now, I’m not having the trouble.

Not sure if this is of any help, but I registered roughly 35 books this afternoon, from 3:30 or so through 5:30 Eastern/Atlantic time. Up to about 5 o'clock I experienced the error message maybe once in every five books, and when I hit my browser's "back" button and retried the registration it worked correctly the second time. At around 5, I ran into more repeated errors; I'd keep on hitting "back" and then "register", with the maximum retries about five. This only happened on two or three books, and after that things seemed to improve quite a bit, both in the absence of that error page and in the accuracy of the book-info lookup. [I did wind up entering the book details manually for the majority of the books as the lookup wasn't working very consistently, but that is - or may be? - a separate issue from the error-message/stack-trace situation.]

I suppose I'm getting used to the try-try-again process - it hardly bothers me at all now {rueful grin}.

I'm still having major problems with this. Over half the time a book "can't be found in the database" multiple times, when I know it's there. Then I get past that, and "there's a problem, try again." When I get past that hurdle, I get the server error issue. I've logged out, cleared my cache, tried different browsers... no change. Eventually it works. But it's time consuming.

I was only registering one book so I ended up using skip search and entered it manually.

It is a recurring blip. I can go weeks without encountering it.

I can enter books manually though. It seems to happen a lot when I register my pre- labels.

The error
Server Error in '/' Application.

This is getting super frustrating. I no longer use pre-numbered labels, but now even the process of individual registration doesn't work about half the time.

I find it bad enough for myself, but If I were a newbie, I'd call it quits with Bookcrossing once and for all. It's not worth the frustration. Is this issue being worked on at all?

In my twenty year history of Bookcrossing, I have never had such difficult registering books.

I had it appear twice on me today, but in both cases it went through the second time. But I think there is still an underlying problem.

Today after I finally am able to find the book, which has its own problems, and type out my initial journal entry, the registration sometimes won't go through, gets a page-long error message that starts:

"Server Error in '/' Application.
Object reference not set to an instance of an object.
Description: An unhandled exception occurred during the execution of the current web request. Please review the stack trace for more information about the error and where it originated in the code.

Exception Details: System.NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.

Let me know if you need the whole page of code. I can send it next time this happens.

I don't remember if this is the same error message I had gotten previously. If I hit the back button and try again it will go through after a few tries. Using a desktop PC with Firefox if that makes a difference. So far they all have gotten registered eventually, it just takes longer and several tries.

This is happening to me right now!

The site has rebooted, hopefully the problem is now rectified

today I had no problems to register 17 books
no error messages at all
thanks!!

The Google Search brings up the book fairly quickly, the main problem is when you have to press the Select button, then the book disappears. After about 5-10 attemps it will eventually let you register it. Just keep pressing the button. :)

I have given up with the prenumbered labels and always expect errors now. I've learned to live with it, but it will definitely discourage newbies who are trying to learn how to BookCross. Thanks for your continued attention to this annoying problem.

How do I register ?

How do I register ?

Hi! This forum post describes the readathon: https://www.bookcrossing.com/---/586680

You don't really have to register ahead of time; just post what you're reading, in your social-media site of choice and/or in the readathon thread in the Fun and Games forum.

Hope that helps!

How do I register ?

I have tried the search several times and it gives me and error or if I do get as far as registering, I get the "Server Error in '/' Application." error. I have tried the same book about 10 times (Google Chrome). Also, after I get the error, the Recent Releases and Recent Catches text changes to Chinese.

... both last night and today without success.

... able to register the book by skipping search, in case that helps someone else.
